Are promotional F1 cars functional or just shells?

When old Formula 1 cars are sold on auction, do these have real engines and transmissions in place or are they just empty shells?

Most of the time sold Formula 1 cars have their transmission in place. Some cars can miss the transmission because they are the property of the engine manufacturer. For example Ferrari builds them for Sauber.

An engine is not so common, because they too belong to the engine manufacturer and they are not keen on giving them out. In addition the electronics can be missing from the car.
