How is a Formula 1 car started?

How is a Formula 1 car started? Can it be started in the same way as a regular road going car?

The car is started using an external starter engine. It is connected to the end of the gearbox with a long axle. Formula 1 cars have no starting engine as it would only add weight, since the car is normally only started once per race.
