Opening of western extension to Helsinki Metro delayed by months

The extension of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Metro towards the west in Helsinki and Espoo is delayd. Originally the traffic was supposed to start on August 15th 2016, but due to technical reasons the opening is delayed. The exact length of the delay is not known, but is estimated to be several months.

A meme by a beer thirsty Helsinki subway driver escalates quickly

During some unusually warm weather in early May 2016 a Helsinki Subway driver put the text "OISPA KALJAA" to the display in the Metro train.

The term is a meme that refers loosely translates to "I wish I had beer" and was a common meme in Finland in 2015 and early 2016. The short version "OISPA" works just as well.

Finland bans Kick Ass Torrents (KAT) file sharing site

The Finnish court has ordered teleoperators to block access to the KickAssTorrents (KAT) file sharing site in Finland. This is done by DNS and IP limitations on the network level. This is similar to the Piratebay block in place since 2012 - which as proved very ineffective.

First three grid positions in Russian GP 2016 filled by Finnish citizens

For the first time in Formula 1 history the three first positions are filled by drivers of Finnish origin. The Russian Sochi Grand Prix in 2016 will be headed by Nico Rosberg, Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Räikkönen.

Out of the bunch Nico Rosberg holds both a German and a Finnish citizenship, but represents Germany. Bottas and Räikkönen represent Finland.

Airplane triggers lightning, burns down a house in Finland

Finnish Meteorological Institute experts claim that an aircraft approaching the Helsinki-Vantaa airport in Finland triggered a lightning bolt that set a house on fire. Evidence points that a Norwegian Boeing 737 arriving from London on was indeed the reason for the freak accident.

The worlds largest sauna heats up in Espoo, Finland

Technology students in Espoo started preparations for mayday already this saturday by going to the sauna. The largest sauna in the world was heating up at five PM and in the first hour there had been over two hundred visitors in the hot room.

Microsoft opens Flux, a free co-working space in downtown Helsinki

If you're in downtown Helsinki and looking for a place to work, there's a new option for you. Microsoft has opened a co-working space in Korkeavuorenkatu. The creative space offers a cafeteria area, a 3d-printer and various rooms. The space is known as Flux.

Hundreds of Finns struck by Hotels.com credit card fraud

The Finnish Police is investigating credit card fraud targeted at finns that have used the popular Hotels.com online service. In the first months of the year there have been a record number of reports related to the service that is a popular Hotel reservation service.
